What should you look for when selecting an asbestos or mould specialist?
The basics:
⇒ MTCU Type 3 Certified Supervisors and Workers —This is the ONLY government certification for asbestos workers and supervisors to demonstrate they are competent. Certified workers must pass an MTCU examination which clearly indicates they are familiar with the regulations and protocols for asbestos
⇒ Insurance that specifically covers mould and asbestos abatement of at least $5,000,000
⇒ Clean record with the Ministries
⇒ WSIB Certified
⇒ Knowledge and application of guidelines set out in Ontario Regulation 278/05
⇒ Experience doing similar projects, minimum 1 year
Other things you should also consider:
⇒ Does the organization have experienced, professional leadership, preferably greater than 10 years?
⇒ Is a 3rd party conducting the air monitoring / quality control measures?
⇒ Is a Professional Engineer or Certified Industrial Hygienist signing off on the project?
⇒ Is the price of the contractor in the same ballpark as other quotations?
⇒ Security background clearance
⇒ Written contracts that specifically outline the scope of work and pricing
⇒ Willingness to share paperwork such as Notice of Projects, Permits, Certificates, etc.
When it comes to an asbestos or mould related concerns, you want to entrust that all steps are taken to ensure safety, and that the removal of these hazardous materials is efficient and effective (the last thing you want is having to pay more in the future to fix a company’s mistakes, or the corners they cut).
